Power of Attraction
While the ‘super powers of manipulation’ are seemingly out of reach of ordinary mortals, developing magnetism or the power of attraction seems more feasible. Techniques have been put forth across the ages and across cultures, with the common threads that tie them all being awareness through meditation and conscious breathing, and alignment with divine energy.
Varchas: When we feel drawn towards a person we call the person ‘charismatic’. In Kannada, charisma or compelling charm is called ‘varchas’. The unseen power that is responsible for this power of attraction is the enhanced flow of ‘praana’ or energy within one’s naadis.

Magnetism: While most assume that charisma is inherent or God- given, Paramahamsa Yogananda commands his followers to develop magnetism by the use of will-power. He speaks of two types of magnetism, one that attracts people and material possessions and the other, that attracts God. The former attracts the right spouse, the right friends, helps in making the right choices etc. But merely developing the first, leads to disillusionment at some stage of the jeeva’s spiritual journey. The two kinds of magnetism are complementary, for the jeeva is a medium that exhibits the flow of the magnetism of the lord.
Power of Presence: Eckhart Tolle, the author of ‘The Power of Now’ tells us to keep a part of our energy within ourselves (centred) at all times, especially in large gatherings, and during mindless chattering, heated arguments etc. This results in ‘presence’ or being in the moment, which gives one a sense of peace, increased awareness, and thereby increased command over the flow of events. According to Tolle, magnetism is not a skill to be developed but an inherent quality that needs to be recognised and honed through aligning with divine energy.

Manifestation: Visualisation, journalling, practice of positive affirmations (verbal and written), and expressing anticipatory gratitude, are a few techniques that help one ‘manifest’ or turn one’s desires to reality. Harnessing one’s subconscious mind with the aid of meditation, goes a long way in achieving this. It has gained a lot of popularity in recent times.

Law of attraction: This works on the principle that our beliefs and thoughts shape our destiny. It also states that we attract everything we ‘want’ as well as everything we ‘don’t want’. Meditation helps purify one’s thoughts, still the mind and bring about inner peace, thereby making one a magnet for positive experiences.

The Silva Mind Control Method: Popularised by Jose Silva in the 70s, this method focusses on activating the ‘alpha’ state of mind and using the power to manifest what one truly wants, and truly believes is possible and will happen. This technique is mainly useful for improving memory and ability to learn, have a healthier body and to have productive dreams.

The five states of mind reflected through recording one’s brain waves:
1. When the brain is operating at the alpha frequency between 8 to 12 Hertz, the relaxed mind absorbs new information with ease and is markedly more creative.
2. The gamma state is one of high alert and focus, and the brain waves are the fastest and range between 30 to 80 Hertz.
3. The frequency of beta waves is between 13 to 30 Hertz. The associated states of mind are anxiety, alertness directed externally.
4. The delta state of mind registers the lowest frequency from 0 to 4 Hertz and is associated with deep, dreamless sleep. It is also the most common state of mind of neonates.
5. The very relaxed and inward looking phase with brainwaves ranging from 4 to 8 Hertz is called theta state of mind.
The Demartini Value Determination Process: Human Behaviour Specialist, Dr John Demartini, has designed 13 questions, which elicit answers that help uncover one’s core values, gain self-awareness, make choices that align with one’s values to become fulfilled, and finally transform into a magnetic person.
